Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon - Notes

Hello everyone, today I am starting a new series of blogs where I would be sharing a few quotes from books and would explain them. The main purpose is to give you an idea about the book and also summarize the book in the best possible manner and also you can refer to this blog if you have read these books to revise.

Today, I want to share my favourite book which had motivated me to start this blog, and yesterday I read it again and it helped me to get back to writing.

 Notes and Highlights

Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing.

I have seen that a lot of us want to do be a perfectionist and do innovative stuff but the problem is that would not result in a product most times or the quality won't be that good. But, if you keep practicing and put in the ideas from other artists in your work, the end result would be much better

There isn't a move that's a new move.

This quote has been said by Kobe Bryant. He says that he has tried to copy the moves of various legends but although he tried he was never able to master any of them as his body is different from them and ended up creating something different.

Most of us are copying our mentors, our parents although we are never able to completely copy them and end up completely different.

It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique.

When I get busy, I get stupid

This quote is something that I can completely relate to it. After this pandemic, I was productive as I had lots of free time where I literally did nothing but walk on my terrace and observe the surroundings and that free time helped me a lot in clearing my thoughts and getting ideas. But, recently I had been a bit distracted and demotivated and the whole routine has become a bit unorganized which has actually affected me. So, I would say that waking up early and having a lot of free time at your hand would actually make a lot of change in your output.

A hobby is something creative that's just for you. You don't try to make money or make money off it, you just do it because it makes you happy.

I recently realized the importance of hobby and this book talks a lot about hobbies and how they affect our work. They give us ideas, they make us happy and help us work better.

Make stuff every day. Know you're going to suck for a while. Fail. Get better.

Discipline is really important. And I would like to say one thing if you miss out on a habit one day, then make sure you are doing that habit the next day otherwise you might stop doing that thing completely and also don't care about the results it is going to take some time but you are definitely going to get better.

garbage in, garbage out

Make sure you are consuming the right content, following the right people and spending time with the right people as this is going to have a direct effect on your work.

You can't go looking for validation from external sources.

Ironically, really good work appears to be effortless

A lot of times we do great at our work and it appears so effortless yet most people are unable to do them. And then they make fun of us or criticize us. The reason is very simple they don't work regularly, if we work regularly on ourselves we would be able to find patterns and spot opportunities that are there but our eyes are unable to find them.

Don't make excuses for not working - make things with the time, space and materials you have, right now

A lot of times we blame our situation, we blame some people or our resources for not doing things we are passionate about. We stop doing things saying we don't have time or due to some other reasons. Consistency is very important if we want to excel at something. It is said that to master a skill you have to give 10000 hours but very few people can give this much time to a particular thing. So, if you are doing something don't leave it due to some excuse. Most of the leaders in our world have spent more than 10000 hours and we can see where they are right now.
